        NEW FIREARM STORAGE REQUIREMENTS

        (BEGINS JULY 1st 2017)

         

         

        Firearms must be kept at the principal place of residence of the registered owner.

        UNLESS used for business, then can be stored at the principal place of business.

        OR unless otherwise approved by the Registrar.

         

        Less than 20 A+B Class Firearms:

        Requires a Level 1 Safe (if the safe is located under the main roof)

        OR Level 2 Safe (if the safe is located in a secured outbuilding)

        OR a prescribed safe (subject to conditions)

         

        Less than 20 Firearms (including C and/or H class) firearms:

        Requires a Level 2 Safe

        OR Level 1 safe (subject to conditions)

        OR a prescribed safe (subject to conditions)

         

        20 or more but less than 35 Firearms (with no more than 29 H-class):

        Requires Storage Level 1

         

        35 or more but less than 50 Firearms (with no more than 29 H-class):

        Requires Storage Level 2

         

        50 or more Firearms

        Requires Storage Level 3

         

        30 or more H-Class Firearms (regardless of any other class of firearms)

        Requires Storage Level 3

         

          

        Level 1 Safe:

        Body + Door Minimum 2mm Thick

        Door must be recessed or flush fitting to prevent easy leverage

        AND fitted with a 3-point Locking mechanism OR external lock - (No less than 40mm wide with hardened steel shackle and is fitted with a cover to prevent the lock being cut, removed, breeched or tampered with)

        AND must be fixed to the structure with at least 2 anchor bolts (unless >150kg)

         

        Level 2 Safe:

        Body + Door Minimum 3mm Thick

        Door must be recessed or flush fitting to prevent easy leverage

        AND fitted with a 3-point Locking mechanism OR external lock - (No less than 40mm wide with hardened steel shackle and is fitted with a cover to prevent the lock being cut, removed, breeched or tampered with)

        AND must be fixed to the structure with at least 2 anchor bolts (unless >150kg)

         

        Prescribed safe (Subject to conditions)

        A safe with a minimum overall thickness of 1.6mm

        AND must be fixed to the structure with at least 2 anchor bolts (unless >150kg)

         

        Storage Level 1

        Firearms are secured in a Level 2 Safe

        AND the premises is installed with EITHER a CCTV System OR an intruder alarm system

         

        Storage Level 2

        Firearms are secured in a Level 2 Safe

        AND the premises is installed with BOTH a CCTV System AND an intruder alarm system

         

        Storage Level 3

        Firearms are secured in a Strongroom

        AND the premises is installed with BOTH a CCTV System AND an intruder alarm system

         

        (CONDITIONS)

        A Person can only store firearms in a Prescribed safe (or Level 1 safe with H-Class firearms) IF:

        The person owned and used the safe to secure their firearms before July 1st 2017,

        AND EITHER a period of no more than 12 month has passed from the 1st July 2017

        OR notice has been given (in writing) by the person to the registrar by 1st July 2018 and the Registrar has confirmed receipt of the notice.
