Based on the .223 Remington case, the .17 Remington is a pure varmint round that can handle predators of smaller sizes as well. The .17 Remington case offers nice capabilities such as high muzzle velocity at low recoil, but as the bullets are small the maximum ranges for this caliber are quite limited. In fact, the .17 Remington is one of few calibers where powder weight may exceed the weight of the projectile.
